Safety Professionals Workshop

What is the Safety Professionals Workshop?

This workshop is designed for safety professionals working with utility companies, departments of transportation (DOT), and other governmental agencies that need a ground-level view of the basic components of arboriculture while working in proximity to overhead utility facilities or on electrical rights-of-way. The goal of this workshop is to increase individuals’ safety awareness and improve safety culture. Class size is limited to 20. Instruction is largely based in the classroom with field examples as appropriate.

This workshop has a minimum of 16 hours. Participants are eligible for Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) credits. Continuing education units (CEU) for the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP) program and the International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist, and Certified Utility Specialist are also available upon request.

The prerequisites for this workshop are:

  • Willing and able to participate in group discussions and roundtable learning sessions
  • Ability and willingness to follow directions
  • Basic knowledge of safety in utility, arboricultural, or transmission/distribution work
  • Commitment to two days of classroom-based training
  • Some knowledge of general safety standards and OSHA (OHSA 1910.269) regulations

In this workshop you will learn:

  • How to analyze a job site
  • Common causes of injury in tree work
  • Current ANSI Z-133 safety standards for arborists
  • Current OHSA 1910.269 standards for utility tree trimming operations
  • Current CalOHSA standards for arboriculture and utility tree worker safety (California only)
  • How to inspect equipment and PPE
  • Herbicide label law
  • Basic tree risk assessment
  • How to perform a safety audit
  • How electrical hazards impact tree work
  • How to set up aerial rescue practice

What you will receive:

  • ANSI Z133 Safety Standards
  • Tree Finder: A Manual for Identification of Trees by their Leaves by May Theilgaard Watts
  • Certificate of completion
  • TCIA CEUs for the CTSP program, if requested
  • Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) credits, if requested
  • ACRT Arborist Training hard hat decal
